Feb. 14 national holiday: Mikati

BEIRUT: Prime Minister Najib Mikati declared Feb. 14 a national holiday to mark the eighth anniversary of the assassination of statesman Rafik Hariri.

Public institutions, government departments, municipalities as well as public and private schools will be closed Thursday, said a statement issued Friday by Mikati's office.

Five-time Prime Minister Hariri was killed in a massive bombing Feb. 14, 2005 as his convoy passed the St. George Hotel near downtown Beirut.

Twenty-two other people were killed in the blast, including Economy Minister Bassel Fleihan and several of Hariri’s bodyguards.
