BEIRUT: A transport truck carrying women prisoners smashed into a Lebanese police escort on the Karantina highway in Beirut Monday, killing a policeman and wounding four people, including inmates.

None of the prisoners escaped the truck, a witness at the scene said.

The witness said the prisoners were all female inmates.

Police cordoned off the area soon after the incident around midday, security sources said, adding that a replacement transport vehicle was dispatched to the scene.

The sources said the total number of prisoners in the vehicle was yet to be determined.
