SIDON, Lebanon: A shootout Thursday between two rival groups of men left one man wounded in the southern city of Tyre, security sources said.

They said the 9 a.m. clash took place between a group of men from Tyre and another from the nearby town of Bazourieh.

Hussein Hodroj was wounded in the shootout and admitted to Hiram Hospital in Tyre.

Shortly afterwards, however, Hodroj escaped from the hospital, according to the sources, who spoke to The Daily Star on condition of anonymity.

The sound of gunfire from Kalashnikov weapons and pistols of different calibers reverberated across the area.

Police opened an investigation into the shooting and launched a hunt for the perpetrators.

The sources said the clash was not politically motivated.
