TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Workers of the municipality of Tripoli asked Mayor Nader Ghazal to reconsider his decision to resign from his post.
Ghazal announced early this month that he intended to resign in protest of the corruption that has plagued the municipality.
The Tripoli municipal council has witnessed turmoil over the past two years caused by internal disputes.
Shaaban Khaddour, who heads Tripoli’s municipal workers union, demanded that the members of the municipal council overcome their differences and work according to their conscience.
He also demanded that Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Interior Minister Marwan Charbel and other dignitaries in the city should, “intervene to resolve the differences between Ghazal and members of the municipal council.”
The workers visited Ghazal at his office and gave him a petition signed by all the employees of the municipality.
“We will not become false witnesses and remain helpless in the fight against injustice and corruption. However I insist on my resignation because there is a dire need for a harmonious and cooperative municipal council,” Ghazal said.
