BEIRUT: The Interior Ministry called Tuesday for by-elections to be held in March for municipal councils in 22 villages and seven mukhtars. It said by-elections for mukhtars would be held March 3 in three villages in Akkar – Qlayaat, Hay Sheikh Ayyash and Ain Yaacoub – as well as in the Baalbek village of al-Qoddam, the Rashaya village of Aqabeh, the Tyre district village of Jebal al-Botom and al-Khalwat in the district of Hasbaya, according to the Central News Agency. The ministry also called for municipal council by-elections in 22 villages. In the north, polls will be held in Owaynat, Kroum Arab, Qobeiyat, Bireh, Khat al-Petrol, Rammah and al-Sahleh in Akkar. The Aley villages of Kahaleh and Sarhamoul, Jabaa and Mazraat al-Suweidan in Baalbek, al-Sharbin and Mazraat Sogod in Hermel, and Nasrieh in Zahle will elect new councils. Debbieh and Mazraat al-Chouf in Chouf, Nafakhieh in Tyre, and Jezzine in Kfar Houne are included in the list, as are the Zgharta village of Basloukit, Bkifa in Rashaya, Qornayel in Baabda, and the Metn village of Hemlaya. – The Daily Star
