Activists protest over nationality law
A+ A-

BEIRUT: Human rights and nationality campaigners held a sit-in at Martyrs’ Square in Downtown Beirut Sunday to protest a leaked ministerial report advising against equal citizenship rights for women.

Activists from the Individual Initiative for Human Rights association, Maseer and My Nationality is My Pride, in addition to women rights activists and representatives of civil society organizations, participated in the protest, the National News Agency reported.

Prominent activist Linda Matar called for holding protests until Lebanese women acquire the right to pass their nationality to their children.

Hayat Arslan, Head of the Committee for Promoting Women’s Role in National Decision-Making, expressed regret over the absence of any judicial body where activists can challenge the decisions of the ministerial committee.

“We will convey our opinion through casting a blank ballot in the upcoming elections,” she said.
