Committee launches plan to combat drug addiction
A+ A-

BEIRUT: Prime Minister Najib Mikati chaired a ministerial committee meeting tasked with following up on drug-related issues Monday.

The committee includes Deputy Prime Minister Samir Moqbel, Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, Health Minister Ali Hasan Khalil, Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi, Youth and Sports Minister Faisal Karami, Information Minister Walid Daouk and Internal Security Forces head Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi.

After the meeting, Qortbawi said the committee discussed a national campaign to combat addiction as well as the trade and marketing of drugs, the National News Agency reported.

Fifteen days prior, the general prosecution began sending addicts detained by security forces to a special committee that can refer them to treatment centers in hospitals, Qortbawi said.

He added that addicts were being sent to the Dahr al-Bashiq Hospital, and that another treatment center is to be set up in the Rafik Hariri University Hospital.
