Baalbek arrest prompts retaliatory violence

BEIRUT: Army Intelligence arrested a man in the Bekaa Valley city of Baalbek Friday, prompting retaliatory acts against municipality vehicles and facilities.

The man, identified only by the initials W.G., was detained on an arrest warrant in the Kayyal neighborhood.

Following his arrest, unidentified men set fire to a bulldozer owned by the Baalbek municipality and briefly closed the landfill in their neighborhood, accusing civil security personnel of assisting Army Intelligence in making the arrest.

Also Friday, a child was killed in a hit-and-run incident on the Baalbek-Homs international highway.

An unidentified car hit 6-year-old Mohammad Bazzal before speeding away, the National News Agency reported.

Bazzal was transported to the Dar al-Hikme Hospital in Baalbek but died shortly after arrival.

In Nabatieh, Diana Sharafeddine alleged that three Syrian workers who were painting her house in Kfar Tibnit village robbed her of $4,000 worth of jewelry.

An ISF patrol arrested the suspects and launched an investigation into the incident.
