BEIRUT: Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi announced Thursday that he had rejected a number of judicial appointments proposed by the Higher Judicial Council.
The minister issued a statement in which he argued that the plan would fail to achieve the objective of reforming the judiciary. Qortbawi said appointments should be based on objective standards that promote or demote judges based on their work.
“Based on these points, I will return the appointments to the Higher Judicial Council with detailed remarks,” Qortbawi said.
“The appointments do not constitute a step toward judicial reform that I have been working for since I came into office,” he added.
