BEIRUT: A Lebanese Army officer shot by muggers as he attempted to prevent a robbery at a bank northeast of Beirut last August has died from his wounds.
The Lebanese Army said Capt. Zayyan al-Jurdi, 31, died Thursday of gunshot wounds he sustained while confronting a band of armed robbers at a bank in the Metn region.
Zayyan was a husband and father of a young child, the Army added in a statement.
The officer was withdrawing money from the ATM outside BLOM bank in the Elissar area on Aug. 9 when he witnessed two armed men attempting to carry out a robbery.
When he tried to stop the thieves, they shot him four times.
