SIDON, Lebanon: Two people were wounded Monday when masked gunmen shot in their direction in the Palestinian camp of Ain el-Hilweh, security sources told The Daily Star.
The two, in their thirties, are brothers and belong to Fatah al-Islam, a group affiliated with Al-Qaida which fought against the Lebanese Army in the 2007 battle of Nahr al-Bared Palestinian camp in north Lebanon.
The shooting took place at the bustling vegetable market where security forces are searching for the perpetrators.
The Palestinian Follow-Up Committee is expected to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the incident and exert efforts to contain any possible repercussions.
Sidon MP Bahia Hariri contacted leaders of the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the coalition of Palestinian and Muslim forces in order to contain the situation.
She urged the figures to "work on resolving the repercussions of what happened and defuse tensions."
