Nine arrested for smuggling weapons into Syria

BEIRUT: Authorities charged nine people Friday for transporting explosives into Syria with the aim of launching an attack, a judicial source told The Daily Star.

A group based in Lebanon stands accused of transporting weapons from the Palestinian camp Mieh Mieh, Khalde and Rahab, a neighborhood in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

The nine men – Syrian, Palestinian and Lebanese – have also been linked to other individuals with alleged ties to Al-Qaeda.

Military Prosecutor Saqr Saqr accused the men of belonging to an armed group and planning to carry out a terrorist attack. Saqr referred their case to a military investigative judge.
