One killed in Ain al-Hilweh clashes

SIDON, Lebanon: One person was killed and three others wounded in night-long clashes between gunmen in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh in Sidon that took place late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

The fierce fighting over a checkpoint in the camp began Saturday around midnight between Fatah Movement and Islamist fighters.

Gunmen loyal to Bilal Badr, a former member of the Islamist group Fatah al-Islam, attacked a post manned by Fatah gunmen in the Tiri neighborhood, killing one person immediately, camp sources said.

The attack came shortly after Fatah fighters allegedly shot at Badr’s house, the sources added.

Fatah retained control of the post during fighting that spread into several neighborhoods and took place throughout the night.

The gun battles subsided Sunday morning after hundreds of Palestinians marched at the scene of fighting, urging the gunmen to withdraw from streets.

“We are here in the scene of the clashes, they opened fire on us several times but we forced them to stop fighting,” Palestinian activist Jihad Mawaad told The Daily Star.

“God willing clashes will not erupt again,” he said.
