Lebanese police officer accidentally shoots himself
BEIRUT: A police officer suffered minor wounds Wednesday after he accidentally shot himself outside the police headquarters in Beirut Wednesday, a security source told The Daily Star online.

The source said Col. Ali Hassouna, head of the police station in the Beirut suburb of Ouzai, shot himself in the waist as he was pulling his gun out of his pistol holster.

The incident took place Wednesday morning outside ISF headquarters in the Beirut neighborhood of Ashrafiyeh, the source added.

Hassouna was taken to the nearby Hotel Dieu Hospital where surgeons closed his superficial wound.

A statement released by the ISF later Wednesday said Hassouna accidentally shot himself in the waist as he pulled his gun out of the holster to place it in the glove compartment of his car after he had parked it in the driveway of the ISF Ashrafiyeh headquarters.

The statement said Hassouna was in good health after having been treated at a hospital for minor wounds.
