Israel detains actor from Jenin’s Freedom Theater

BEIRUT: Israeli forces detained an actor from Jenin’s Freedom Theater Saturday at a West Bank checkpoint, according to the Maan news agency.

Rami Awni Hwayel, a 20-year old acting student, was detained at the Shave Shomeron checkpoint in the West Bank while returning to Ramallah from a rehearsal the Freedom Theater staff announced in a statement. An Israeli military spokeswoman said one Palestinian was detained at the checkpoint but did not give further details.

“Rami is playing the main role in ‘Waiting for Godot’ and doing an amazing job, he’s so dedicated to the work. He just left rehearsals today for the weekend to see his family for Ramadan. It’s terrible, we want our Pozzo back,” said theater director Udi Aloni.

Hwayel is the third member of the theater’s staff to be held in recent months. Theater members Adnan Naghnaghiye and Bilal Saadi were detained during a raid July 27 in Jenin.
