NICOSIA: Syrian political blogger Amina Abdullah, who rose to fame through blogs pegged on the pro-reform movement shaking her country, has been detained, a family member wrote on her website Tuesday.

She was detained on Monday evening in Damascus, her cousin wrote.

Three armed men seized Abdullah, in her 20s, off a street and loaded her into a car bearing a window sticker supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to a friend with her at the time, who did not wish to be identified on the blog post.

AFP was unable to obtain independent confirmation of the account.

Half-Syrian, half-American, Abdullah wrote a blog entitled "A Gay Girl in Damascus," which along with other postings in support of Syria's popular protest movement, brought her international fame.

A Facebook group "Free Amina Abdullah" has been created to call for her release.

Her full name is listed as Amina Abdullah Aref al-Omari.
