Assad appoints new prime minister

BEIRUT: Syrian President Bashar Assad appointed Thursday Health Minister Wael Nader al-Halki as the country’s new prime minister, Syria TV reported.

The decision, issued in a decree, comes days after the defection of Halki’s predecessor, Prime Minister Riyad Hijab.

Jordan confirmed Wednesday hosting Hijab, the country's information minister, ending speculation about his whereabouts.
