Mocking Asma Assad website a hoax: report
Assad and first lady Asma Assad arrive at Al-Jalaa Stadium in Damascus to meet with regime supporters.
Assad and first lady Asma Assad arrive at Al-Jalaa Stadium in Damascus to meet with regime supporters.

BEIRUT: A website that social networks reported was a hacked blog belonging to Syria’ First Lady Asma Assad turned out to be a hoax, a British newspaper has reported.

The website, titled “Asma Assad: Official Website of Syria’s First Lady,” contained mocking statements that Twitter reports claimed to belong to the 36-year-old first lady.

“I am Asma Assad. I am the wife of a vicious war criminal. He murders innocent civilians ... I hate freedom, liberty, and justice. I stand with Hezbollah and Iran against the United States and Europe [even though I grew up in there]” read the opening statement on the webpage.

The U.K.’s International Business Times said Friday that the website – http://www.asmaassad.com – was a hoax and could be traced back to the United States.

"A quick check traced the site's IP address to Scottsdale, Arizona, with a publishing date of 9 January, 2012," the daily said.

The paper quoted a security advisor saying that the site had been registered Thursday and was being hosted by Godaddy.com based in Scottsdale, Arizona.

In a statement received by The Times earlier this month, Syria’s first lady voiced support for her embattled husband.

"The president is the president of Syria, not a faction of Syrians, and the first lady supports him in that role," The Times quoted Assad as saying in an email sent via an intermediary from her office.

“These days she is equally involved in bridging gaps and encouraging dialogue. She listens to and comforts the families of the victims of the violence." it added.

Asma, from a Sunni family, originally hails from Homs, the central Syrian city that has witnessed some of the worst violence in the crisis-ridden country.
