Tunisian Jews speak out after racist slogans shouted
Agence France Presse

TUNIS: Jews in Tunisia asked the government Sunday to take steps to avoid a repeat of the anti-Semitic slogans chanted during a visit to the country by Gaza's Hamas leader last week.

"No Tunisian should be insulted, and the government must take measures to ensure this incident is never repeated," Peres Trabelsi, a representative of Tunisia's small Jewish population told AFP after the incident.

Ismail Haniya, prime minister in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, visited Tunis on Thursday to meet the new moderate Islamist-led administration while he was on a tour of the region.

Islamist activists welcoming Haniya were heard chanting slogans like: "Kill the Jews, it is our duty", along with anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian messages.

"There are no Zionists in Tunisia and we don't want to be mixed into the problems of the Middle East," said Trabelsi. "Tunisia is our country."

Tunisia has one of the Arab world's largest Jewish minorities, numbering about 1,500 individuals in a population of more than 10 million.

The population has shrunk drastically from the 100,000 Jews who lived in Tunisia after independence in 1956.

Ajmi Lourimi, a member of the moderate Islamist Ennahda party, said the slogans were an isolated incident that did not reflect the views of the government.

Ennahda last month said Jews living in the north African country were citizens with "all their rights and duties". Those comments came in response an invitation by Israel's Deputy Prime Minister Silvan Shalom for Tunisian Jews to settle in Israel.

I'm a Tunisian Muslim and I was really outraged by those slogans. These extremists do not represent the majority of Tunisians. For years Jews have been living side by side with Muslims in Tunisia, after all they are Tunisians too.

I just wanted to say that in this day and age, it is very appalling that there still are morons that don't think think the Holocaust ever happened.
Thanks CA Haas

I fully agree with your statement about the shrinkage of the Jewish Tunisian population. I would like to add that in 1956, it was 100,000 that's to say 3.3% of the total Tunisian population at that time, which was 3,000,000. Nowadays, there are about 1,500 individuals in a population of almost 11 million. The percentage today is about 150 ppm (parts per million).

In this country, there are other minorities, in particular Imazighen (Berbers)numbering about 100,000 to 150,000 individuals.

With respect to the Jewish issue, can we use the word "cleansing"? Facts are clear enough. We think that the dramatic drop of the Jewish population in Tunisia is the result of policies implemented by rulers of this country.

The present ones didn't hide their commitment to panarabism.

We appalled about what happened to Tunisian Jews and we fear that Tunisian Berbers and other minorities are the next in their list.

i am tunisia and i want to express all my apologies to tunisian Jews. the people who dared insulting Jews are from an extremist party which not represent the tunisian population which is open-minded and tolerant

the cultural richness of Tunisia is in its diversity
