ALGIERS: A legal charity supporting detainees in Guantanamo has condemned the conviction and sentencing of an Algerian after he was forcibly repatriated after eight years in the U.S. Guantanamo detention center.
The Reprieve charity said in a Tuesday statement that Algerian authorities convicted Abdel Aziz Naji with no evidence and that he is now languishing in a prison without adequate medical care.
Naji was sent back to Algeria in July 2010. He was convicted on Jan. 16 of "belonging to a terrorist group abroad" and sentenced to three years in prison, according to the state news agency.
The report said he worked with the Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba along the disputed Kashmir frontier.
According to Reprieve, Naji, who lost his lower right leg in a mine explosion, was involved in humanitarian work and the charges against him were "discredited".
