GENEVA: The UN's quartet of special investigators on Syria said Thursday they had requested a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.

"We have sent a letter to president Assad and we expect that he will accept us in Damascus," Paulo Pinheiro, the Brazilian head of the UN's Commission of Inquiry on Syria, told reporters in Geneva.
