RAMALLAH, West Bank: A Palestinian man was in stable condition Friday after being shot by Israeli troops during a protest in the West Bank against Israeli settlements, a hospital spokesman said. Malek Tammimi, 22, was in “good condition” after surgery to his stomach, the Ramallah hospital spokesman told AFP.

Tammimi was hit by a live bullet that also wounded his hand during the weekly demonstration in the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh.

The Israeli soldiers also fired rubber bullets, and a number of protesters were treated for light wounds at the site, an AFP correspondent said. Omar Ayoub, 21, was also hospitalized after being hit in the head by a rubber bullet.

The hospital said his condition was “not critical.”

The demonstration involving fewer than 200 people heated up when participants attempted to reach a nearby settlement.

Soldiers used tear gas and rubber bullets, and the protesters hurled stones at them, the AFP correspondent said. The army then resorted to live rounds.

A spokeswoman for the Israeli military told AFP there had been a “violent and illegal riot” at Nabi Saleh where soldiers “responded with riot dispersal means.”

“Palestinians surrounded several soldiers and attacked them. Feeling an imminent threat to their lives, the soldiers attempted to distance the attackers with riot dispersal means, and consecutively by firing warning shots in the air.”

“The incident is currently being reviewed,” the Israeli spokeswoman added.
