BEIRUT: Members of the Shariah Committee of a town on the border with Iraq have publicly executed a man accused of murder.
A YouTube video, posted Thursday, purports to show the execution of a young man identified as Yasser Awwad, which took place in front of hundreds of people in a public square of Albu-Kamal.
During the five-minute video, whose contents could not be independently confirmed, a man representing the committee says that the crime took place three months ago and was followed by a confession by the accused.
The father of the victim, also a young man, then rejects the idea of accepting financial compensation from Albu-Kamal residents in lieu of punishment.
The accused murderer appears briefly in the video and is shot in the head at close range, before his body is bundled into a blanket and placed in an ambulance.
