TEHRAN: Opposition figure Mehdi Karroubi's son has been handed a suspended six-month prison sentence for anti-regime conduct, Iran's Fars news agency reported on Wednesday quoting an unnamed source.

Iran's "revolutionary court has sentenced Mohammad Hossein Karroubi to a six-month jail term... for disturbing public opinion against the Islamic regime through giving interviews to foreign media," Fars quoted the source as saying.

"He can appeal the sentence," the source said.

The sentence will not come into effect unless Mohammad Hossein Karroubi commits a crime in a five-year period, according to Fars.

Karroubi, along with another opposition figure Mir Hossein Mousavi, has been under house arrest since February 2011 after calling for a number of anti-regime protests and disputing the 2009 presidential vote which returned Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power.

Dozens of people were killed in the post-election protests, met with a government crackdown, and a number of political activists and journalists have since been handed hefty jail sentences on charges related to the protests.
