BEIRUT: Renowned opposition figure Muntaha al-Atrash is to be charged with supporting terrorism, it was reported Friday.
The daughter of famed Syrian Druze nationalist leader Sultan Pasha al-Atrash, Muntaha has been a vocal critic of the Syrian regime since before the revolution.
According to news website All4Syria, Ali Mamlouk, head of the Syrian National Security Bureau, personally ordered officials within the Justice Ministry to arrest and charge the human rights lawyer.
Atrash is well known for her opposition to the Assad family, and is official spokesperson for the Syrian Organization for Human Rights.
Atrash told Ash-Sharq al-Aswat in April 2011 that the revolution had started due to “40 years of injustice, 40 years of oppression, 40 years of subjugation, 40 years of fear, 40 years of bleeding the homeland and repressing liberties.”
