Funeral held for Iran Guard officer slain in Syria

TEHRAN: An officer in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard who was killed in Syria was buried Tuesday, according to Iran’s semiofficial Mehr news agency.

Mohammad Jamali was killed by “terrorists” several days ago, Mehr said, but didn’t provide further details.

The funeral was held in Kerman in southeastern Iran. Last year, Guard chief commander Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari said the unit had high-level advisers in Syria but denied it has fighters there.

Pro-opposition websites circulated photographs of Jamali with Syrian President Bashar Assad, maintaining, along with other sources, that he had gone to Syria in a “personal” capacity.
