JERUSALEM: The Israeli military says its troops have shot and killed a Palestinian on a tractor who was trying to break into an army base in the West Bank.

The military said the Palestinian crashed through the gate Thursday of the base near Ramallah. It said soldiers felt this was a "life-threatening" situation and opened fire on the tractor.

The incident follows a number of recent Palestinian attacks on Israelis in the West Bank. Last week, a retired Israel colonel was killed by Palestinians armed with iron bars and axes. The previous week, a 9-year-old girl was shot. A month earlier, two soldiers were killed, including one killed by a Palestinian who authorities say wanted to trade the body for a relative in a jail for several shootings.
