DAMASCUS: A taekwondo champion from Syria's national team was killed Wednesday and seven other people were injured when a mortar bomb fell on a sports centre in Damascus, the official SANA news agency said.
"The sportsman Mohammad Nehme was killed today by a mortar bomb fired by terrorists on the al-Fayhaa sports centre" in the centre of the city, the agency said, using the government's terminology for rebels fighting the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
Nehme, 27, had been Syria's taekwondo champion for several years and had joined the national team in 2006. He also won several medals in international competitions.
More than 110,000 people have been killed since the conflict broke out in March 2011 with an uprising against the Assad regime, including over 40,100 civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
