BEIRUT: Supporters of the opposition have responded to a pro-Hezbollah anthem that salutes the party’s military campaign targeting the town of Yabroud.
A song entitled “Ihsam Nasrak bi Yabroud” (Achieve your decisive victory in Yabroud) was posted on YouTube last week by Lebanon’s Ali Barakat, a singer of religious anthems. The lyrics salute Hezbollah’s role in earlier campaigns in Syria and label the rebels as “takfiris.”
The verse “we’ve defeated the armies of the Jews, and now it’s your turn, Yabroud” enraged opposition supporters because their cause was being equated with Zionism.
In one response, a masked fighter claiming to belong to the Nusra Front performs a song to the same tune as Barakat’s, but with different lyrics, denouncing Hezbollah and celebrating rebel fighters’ morale.
A second, more popular response relies on the original song, but with the written title changed to “Ihfar Qabrak bi Yabroud” (Dig your grave in Yabroud).
The video features gruesome footage of the corpses of Hezbollah fighters. Interspersed with these shots is a succession of portrait shots, of Hezbollah fighters who have reportedly been killed in the Syria war.
