US ambassador to Syria Robert Ford retires

WASHINGTON: The United States ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, latterly Washington's main point of contact with the opposition leaders battling Bashar al-Assad's regime, stepped down on Friday.

"Robert Ford is retiring from the foreign service after nearly 30 years," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters.
