ROME: French President Francois Hollande on Friday said he had asked Pope Francis for the Vatican to receive a delegation from Syria's main opposition groups, as peace talks in Switzerland got off to a rough start.

"I expressed my desire that the Vatican could host the Syrian National Coalition," Hollande said after meeting Francis, adding: "The Geneva II conference should be aimed at transition. We need to do everything to stop the fighting and dispatch humanitarian aid."
