BEIRUT: About fifteen soldiers from the elite Israeli Golani Force were killed in fighting last night in the Gaza district of Shejaiya, French daily Le Figaro reported Sunday.

Le Figaro said about 15 soldiers were killed during clashes with Hamas guerillas, where Sagger missiles were used. The commander of one of the infantry brigade’s battalions sustained wounds during the operation, the report said.

Sources told Le Figaro that Saturday night was “one of the deadliest in years for the Israeli army.”

Over 60 Palestinians were killed on Sunday by Israeli shelling of the Gaza neighborhood of Shejaiya, where bodies were strewn in the street and thousands fled to safer areas for shelter.
