RIYADH: Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamid al-Thani arrived in Jeddah Tuesday to discuss developments in Gaza with Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, state media said.

The two leaders “discussed cooperation between the two countries, in addition to developments ... topped by the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories,” SPA state news agency said.

The meeting is the first for the two monarchs since a major rift between Qatar and Saudi Arabia earlier this year, after several Gulf states accused Doha of meddling in their affairs.

It comes as Doha has emerged as a possible peacemaker after Hamas, which controls Gaza, rejected a proposal for a cease-fire by Egypt, a close ally of Saudi Arabia.
