BEIRUT: The opposition-in-exile National Coalition Friday accused the regime of summarily executing 20 rebel fighters in Homs after they surrendered themselves to the authorities.
In a statement, the Coalition said the alleged actions targeted fighters who had turned themselves and their weapons in before last month’s highly publicized withdrawal of hundreds of fighters from the Old City of Homs to rebel-held territory in Homs province.
The Coalition said it had obtained information that around 20 of the fighters were summarily executed, while more than 80 were transferred to Intelligence Branch 215, the notorious “Palestine Branch,” which anti-regime activists routinely accuse of carrying out torture and other abuses.
The Coalition said it was “extremely anxious” about the fate of those reportedly transferred to the Palestine Branch and urged U.N. organizations to investigate, following reports that thousands of people had been tortured to death while in regime custody.
