A senior U.N. official Monday called on all sides to "respect the beleaguered civilians" trapped inside an embattled Palestinian neighborhood in the Syrian capital. The rest of the neighborhood is believed to be under the control of Aknaf al-Bayt al-Makdessi, which is being helped in its defense of the camp by several Syrian rebel militias with a presence in the nearby Eastern Ghouta suburbs of the capital. The Syrian government, meanwhile, has been pounding the camp with airstrikes and artillery. As Krahenbuhl visited the nearby Palestinian neighborhood of Tadamon, which is under the regime's control, residents of Yarmouk staged demonstrations demanding that they receive humanitarian relief. Once the Syrian conflict began in March 2011, some Palestinian factions based in the camp sided with rebels fighting to topple the government, prompting the military to impose a suffocating blockade.
