Regime airstrike in Aleppo kills 40 rebelsAt least 40 rebels were killed as a regime airstrike on their base in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo triggered a huge explosion Thursday.Separately, the Observatory said it had documented nearly 17,000 airstrikes by the regime over the last seven months.It said the total of 16,954 strikes – 8,919 barrel bombs dropped by helicopter and 8,035 raids by war planes – killed 2,921 civilians, of whom 689 were under the age of 18, and 475 women. Mortar bombs fell near the Russian Embassy in the Syrian capital, killing one person, in the second such attack this week, the Observatory said.
