The Arab league chose former Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu al-Gheit Thursday as its new secretary-general, after diplomats said the vote was delayed for hours due to Qatari reservations.Abu al-Gheit served as Egypt's foreign minister during the last seven years of Hosni Mubarak's rule, leaving his post in 2011, following the protests that toppled the ageing ruler.Several diplomats told AFP that Doha accused Abu al-Gheit of pushing Egypt to boycott a Qatari-proposed Arab summit in 2009 to discuss an Israeli offensive against the Palestinian Gaza Strip.Abu al-Gheit is the eighth secretary-general of the League since it was founded in 1945 .
