Egypt said a new Israeli law giving Jews the exclusive right to self-determination in the country undermined the chances for peace in the Middle East and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes. The law, which was passed Thursday, has drawn rebuke from the European Union and was denounced by the Palestinian Authority and 1948 Palestinians as racist legislation. The legislation defines the establishment of Jewish communities as being in the national interest and downgrades Arabic from an official language of the country to one with special status.Saudi Arabia said the adoption of the law would also be a barrier to ending the decadeslong Israeli-Palestinian conflict.1948 Palestinian citizens account for some 17.5 percent of Israel's population of more than 8 million.
