President Donald Trump's special Mideast envoy lashed out at Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat Sunday, saying his "false claims" and rhetoric hasn't brought peace closer. Jason Greenblatt was responding in Israel's Haaretz newspaper to an earlier op-ed by Erekat accusing American officials of acting as "spokespeople" for Israel and criticizing the U.S. for moving its embassy to occupied Jerusalem.Trump has promised to pursue the "ultimate deal" between Israelis and Palestinians.Erekat had condemned the U.S. for the embassy move noting it occurred amid violence along the Gaza border, just 72 kilometers away.Palestinians saw the decision as siding with Israel on the most sensitive issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and say it disqualifies the U.S. from its traditional role of Mideast peace broker.
