Summary
Clashes between Yemen's Houthi rebels and government forces broke out near the Red Sea city of Hudaida Friday, as United Nations-mediated peace talks stalled pending the arrival of a Houthi delegation. The talks, meant to be the first between Yemen's warring parties in two years, were scheduled for Thursday in Geneva but the Houthi delegation refused to leave Yemen over alleged fears of being blocked from returning to the capital Sanaa.
Griffiths, who began consultations with the Yemeni government delegation in Geneva Thursday, was still awaiting Houthi representatives from Sanaa in order to hold peace talks, U.N. spokeswoman Alessandra Vellucci said.
The United Nations said Thursday that Griffiths was not expected to hold any talks at its Geneva offices Friday.
