BEIRUT: The March 14 general secretariat Wednesday asked President Michel Sleiman to summon Lebanon’s ambassador to Syria from the country and not place Lebanon in confrontation with other Arab countries over violence there.
“March 14 forces ask the president to prevent Lebanon from being in a danger zone in confrontation with its Arab brothers,” the secretariat said in a statement released following their weekly meeting. “It also asks him to summon the Lebanese ambassador to Damascus for 'discussion'."
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait have all recalled their ambassadors to Damascus in recent days.
The secretariat added that Lebanon’s decision over the recent U.N. Security Council statement makes it a conspirator in the bloodshed taking place in its neighboring country, and described Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour’s latest visit to Damascus as a disgrace for Lebanon.
"The foreign minister's visit to Damascus to express support to the Syrian regime is a disgrace for Lebanon which seems to be alone today among all Arab countries in supporting the Syrian regime,” the statement said.
On Aug. 7, Mansour visited Damascus for talks with President Bashar Assad, during which Mansour said that Lebanon rejected any interference in the internal affairs of Syria.
Mansour’s visit came after Lebanon decided to disassociate itself from a United Nations Security Council’s statement condemning the violence against anti-government protesters in Syria.
“The secretariat warns that the government’s position places Lebanese in a position they did not choose but actually rejected, a position of conspiracy with bloodshed that the whole world condemned,” the statement said, adding that the lack of support for the UNSC statement represented the government’s affiliation with the Syrian regime.
In the statement, March 14 expressed its support for the pro Syrian demonstrations that took place in Lebanon.
