BEIRUT: Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with British Ambassador to Lebanon Tom Fletcher Monday at the Grand Serail where the two discussed ways to protect Lebanon from regional instability.
“We are all worried about stability in Lebanon in this difficult time that the region is going through while the Lebanese border is [also] witnessing a state of instability,” Fletcher told reporters after his meeting with Mikati.
Fletcher also said that he conveyed positive responses from Britain regarding Mikati's suggestions to improve stability in the country in cooperation with the U.K. government.
“First provide support for the Lebanese Army, police service to help them carry out their duties efficiently in supporting stability and secondly, in the field of investment,” he added.
In November, Mikati met with Cameron during his first official visit to the United Kingdom since his appointment as Lebanese prime minister
Fletcher told reporters he would be heading to London this week where he is expected to give a speech in which he will bring up the various investment opportunities in Lebanon and urge British companies to invest in the Mediterranean country.
He added that U.K. investments in Lebanon should target the field of education by offering Lebanese students scholarships to study in the U.K.
Fletcher also reiterated the U.K.’s support for Lebanon paying its share toward the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Mikati transferred last week the money to the U.N.-backed court after months of uncertainty and clear opposition by the March 8 coalition.
Mikati Monday also met with Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Ghadanfar Rukn Abadi. The Iranian envoy handed the prime ministers a letter from his Iranian counterpart on developments in Lebanon.
