Feltman says U.S. to assist Lebanon to secure borders

BEIRUT: U.S. official Jeffrey Feltman said Wednesday the United States would support the Lebanese Army to secure its borders with its neighbors.

Feltman, who arrived earlier Wednesday, also told reporters at the Grand Serail after meeting Prime Minister Najib Mikati that Lebanon is conscientious of its commitments toward the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.

The U.S. official confirmed he would be meeting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and officials from the March 14 coalition and the government.

Feltman also said that there is an international consensus to explore peaceful means to pressure Syrian President Bashar Assad. He also said that such consensus was very important as it revealed what the region and the international community want.

The U.S. welcomed Lebanon's decision to fund the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Feltman said, adding that Lebanon and the Lebanese people recognize obligations set by the international community.

Feltman also said that Lebanon's leadership recognizes Lebanon's interests regarding events in neighboring Syria.

President Michel Sleiman refused to meet with Feltman, in a tit-for-tat move after U.S. officials declined to meet with the president when he was in Washington earlier this year.

Feltman was met by U.S. Ambassador Maura Connelly upon arrival at Rafik Hariri International Airport shortly after midday.

Feltman, who served as ambassador to Lebanon from 2004 to 2008, will also meet Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt, according to Lebanese media.

His visit comes following months of criticism by Washington over Lebanon’s failure to agree on a plan to fund a U.N.-backed tribunal probing the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and repeated warnings to Lebanon about adhering to sanctions on neighboring Syria.

Earlier this month, Feltman told Al-Arabiya television station: “We expect Lebanon to completely implement its international commitments because the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) was established upon Lebanon’s request.”

With the United States and its allies tightening economic sanctions on Syria, the international community is keeping a closer eye on Lebanon, which has traditionally been a refuge for Syrian money laundering. Today, Lebanese banks are under more pressure than ever to scrutinize Syrian accounts.

you can keep your lousy 1960 M16 rifles and used hewy chopers. Neither you or your lousy so-called aid is wanted. We have our holy trinity that protects us: The Army, the Resistance and the People, We rely on that to secure our borders. FYI, we no longer rely on your weapons to defend our selves, our people are becoming self reliant, and building alliances that are mutualy beneficial not the kind you demand, one way street.

How interesting. How very interesting. So now the US will support Lebanon to secure its border...not with Israel, but with Syria. Wow.

Those 1960 M-16's and huey choppers and army hum-vee's,infrastructure projects, and training for our internal security forces... The list continues.... are more than most countries do for us. We should be thankful to receive the help and avoid continuing the wave of ignorance that has plagued our society and continues to do so with the apparent posts before mine.

@babakbir, your such a poop. Obviously you have no knowledge of the latest military tech. Not to mention that you are a very passive cowardly person. How can you be so content to have the Lebanese army be so under armed? and how can you accept that the Lebanese army be at the mercy of such thugs? Israel's defeat in Lebanon at the hands of the resistance came not only from its formidable soldiers, but also with the help of modern weapons supplied to the resistance and radars supplied to the Army not by your USA but by Iran, and Russia. It is your very USA that wants to keep the Lebanese Army ill equiped so that it would not be a threat to your ISrael. It is rats like you and your likes that are plaguing the country, no worries Lebanon will soon rid itslef of the plague that has infected some of its people.

I think Lebanon should toss the Americans out for meddling in Lebanon's domestic affairs.

The U.S. saw no need to help secure Lebanon's border with Israel when Israel carpet bombed Lebanon or the need to prevent Israel's daily incursion into Lebanon's airspace, or prevent Israel's belligerent occupation of Lebanon.

Why now would the U.S. be so obliging in securing Lebanon's borders with Syria.
