BEIRUT: Hezbollah MP Mohammad Raad hit back Friday at accusations that his group is implicated in attacks against U.N. peacekeepers, saying Hezbollah has an interest in Lebanon’s stability, particularly in the south.
“We do not need help from those who want to stand on a hill and watch fake battles and make random accusations because we are a resistance that has an interest in [Lebanon’s] stability, especially on the frontlines [south Lebanon],” Lebanon's National News Agency quoted him a saying Friday.
“What disturbs stability as a result of acts and unknown rockets fired from time to time harms the interest of our people as well as the interest of the resistance and that of our territory,” he said.
“For this reason, they should be ashamed of pointing a finger at the resistance,” he added.
His remarks were a clear response to officials from the rival March 14 coalition, particularly Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, who blamed Hezbollah for last week’s attack on UNIFIL.
Five French peacekeepers and a Lebanese passer-by were wounded when a roadside bomb ripped through a UNIFIL patrol near the southern coastal city of Tyre Dec. 9.
Raad believed Hezbollah was the “first to be harmed by messing with stability” in south Lebanon.
“Some may think that by provoking a hubbub or making accusations ... they would push us to relinquish our positions and our views of the ongoing conflict, be it in Lebanon or the region," he added.
