Houri: Hezbollah not target of calls to rid Beirut of arms

BEIRUT: Beirut MP Ammar Houri, from the Future Movement, said Thursday the call of March 14 Beirut MPs for an arms-free Greater Beirut did not target the resistance.

“The slogan of an arms-free Beirut was raised following a series of security incidents after which the citizen felt that the government was failing to protect him,” Houri said.

March 14 Beirut MPs gathered in Parliament last week to discuss means to achieve their goal of a de-militarized capital.

Following their meeting, the MPs sent separate delegations to President Michel Sleiman, Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati to lobby for their goal.
