BEIRUT: Lebanon reiterated Thursday its commitment to U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 and highlighted Israel’s violations of the resolution, which ended the Jewish state’s 2006 war on Lebanon.
Lebanese ambassador to the U.N. Nawaf Salam issued a statement on the Security Council’s discussions of the 16th report of U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Resolution 1701.
“We reiterated Lebanon’s keenness to implement all the items of Resolution 1701 as stipulated by the policy statement [of the new Cabinet].” The envoy said that Israel was violating the resolution, citing more than 8,000 Israeli violations since its issuance.
Salam also touched on Israel’s continued occupation of the Lebanese part of the village of Ghajar, Shebaa Farms and Kfar Shuba hills, its infringement on Lebanese territorial waters and other violations.
Salam urged the international community to contribute to building the capabilities of the Lebanese Army to help it accomplish its tasks.
