BEIRUT: A number of heads of state used the occasion of Independence Day to call on Lebanese leaders to fulfill the country’s international obligations, while also extending congratulations.
President Michel Sleiman received telegrams from several presidents, including U.S. President Barack Obama, who wrote: “I extend my sincere and warm wishes on the occasion of Lebanon’s Independence Day, celebrated on Nov. 22. The United States continues to completely support Lebanon’s sovereignty and political independence and we stand by the Lebanese in their quest to achieve justice and end impunity for political assassinations.”
Sleiman also received a telegram from French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who wrote: “On the occasion of Independence Day, I reiterate France’s complete support for Lebanon’s unity, independence, sovereignty and the safety of its land, and you know my personal investment in this matter. At a time when the Arab world is witnessing historic upheavals, Lebanon should continue to be a model of openness, forgiveness and mutual respect between the sects that constitute the source of its richness. I know how keen you are to preserve stability and ensure the work of institutions and I support your efforts to relaunch national dialogue. Since I am aware of the importance you give to Lebanon respecting its international obligations, I thank you for the measures you have taken to reinforce the protection of UNIFIL forces, which benefit from the [Lebanese] army’s support and cooperation. In this context, it is important also that your country fulfill its obligations toward the U.N., especially on the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. I repeat my congratulation to you and the Lebanese people.”
