BEIRUT: Hezbollah MP Hussein Musawi played down the potential consequences of government collapse Monday, saying that the country will not be affected, whatever the outcome of Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.
“Cabinet is headed toward holding a session on Wednesday and is likely to debate the tribunal issue which may pass or not pass,” Musawi told a gathering on the third day of Ashura in the city of Baalbek Monday.
The issue of funding the tribunal – which Lebanon is obligated to do under Resolution 1757 – is expected to be put to a vote during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. Prime Minister Najib Mikati has said he will resign if the funding for 2011 is blocked, threatening the collapse of the government.
“Whatever the results, everything will remain the same. It’s not the end of the world as some believe,” Musawi said.
“Whether the government stays or leaves, or becomes a caretaker government, nothing at all will happen,” the Baalbek-Hermel lawmaker stressed.
“No one should think that hell will break loose,” Musawi added, noting that Lebanon is used to similar situations.
In the event of government resignation, Musawi promised that Hezbollah will take the “appropriate decision.”
