Lebanese pay respects to Saudi royal family

BEIRUT: President Michel Sleiman flew to Riyadh Wednesday, leading an official delegation to pay their respects to Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz who died Saturday.

The delegation accompanying Sleiman on a private jet included Kataeb (Phalange) Party leader Amin Gemayel, Deputy Prime Minister Samir Moqbel, Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi, Minister for the Displaced Alaaeddine Terro along with MPs Ghazi Zeaiter, Nehme Tohme and Ahmad Fatfat.

Army Commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi, General Prosecutor Saeed Mirza, the head of General Security, Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim, the director general of the Internal Security Forces, Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi, and former ministers Adnan Qassar and Khaled Qabbani were also part of the same delegation.

Other Lebanese politicians traveled Wednesday to Saudi Arabia to offer their condolences to Saudi officials.

A Middle East Airlines private jet carried a delegation from former Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s Future bloc, which was headed by former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and included other March 14 MPs.

Among the delegation was Ahmad Hariri, the Future Movement’s secretary-general, former MPs and ministers and a number of religious figures and members of the media. Saad Hariri headed the delegation when it assembled in Riyadh, and went to pay condolences for the crown prince’s death.

Separately, Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt boarded a private jet headed to Riyadh. – The Daily Star
