BEIRUT: Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun warned late Friday that there would be a “world war” should the regime of President Bashar Assad come near to falling given Russian and Chinese insistence that embattled leader remain in power.
In an interview with Almayadeen TV, Aoun said should Assad’s regime come near to falling, a “world war” would erupt “because China and Russia will not allow the Syrian regime to fall.”
He also ruled out Assad’s regime ending should there be a settlement and that “Syria will remain in Russia and China’s sphere of influence.”
Aoun, a supporter of Assad in Lebanon, admitted that Syrians had legitimate demands “but the two sides need to hold talks for demands to be achieved.”
“Democracy is a gradual process and isn’t achieved in one go,” he said.
He also expressed concern about religious extremism in Lebanon, “particularly with the course of developments.”
He said Al-Qaeda groups were present in the country “under a variety of names but none of them avow to belonging to the group.”
